The Problem

The XO was in a quandary. His artillery battery was to be tested for hasty occupation and displacement. In this type of exercise, there was simply no time to boot up a computer, and they rarely survived the rough-and-tumble packing that accompanies a fast redeployment. The XO winced as he remembered how heavy pelican cases were tossed on top of his laptop.

For a hasty occupation, the XO had trained on manual equipment such as paper maps and M2 compass. However, “Actual” had other ideas. Only a mobile computer had up-to-date grid maps of the frequently changing roads in the desert training area. Furthermore, his Command Element wanted to be able to move his battery and change targets at a moment’s notice. His battery had to be “networked.”

Where could he find a computer that would boot up quickly, and survive the harsh desert conditions as well as not-too-gentle handling by his troops?

The solution

The ROCKY RK10, the newest upgrade of AMREL’s popular 15” laptop, has 25 years of rugged experience built in to its tough frame. Independently certified for MIL-STDs 810 and 461, the RK10 has a combat-proven platform that has successfully operated in the harshest combat environments.

The ROCKY RK10 also has AMREL’s unique Fault Tolerant Isolation Design – an encapsulation process that protects individual components from water, dust, and other foreign matter. Analogous to a submarine, each chamber in the body of ROCKY notebooks and on-board/fixed vehicle units is individually sealed.

Designed for speed, the RK10 has revved up its operation with:
  • Powerful i7 processor
  • Better graphics card
  • Expanded memory
  • USB 3.0 ports
  • Improved storage
The RK platform has proven its reliability in the field in applications for:
  • Portable Sensor Control
  • Portable Radio System
  • Search & Rescue
  • Flight Line
  • Unmanned Systems
    Operator Control Units
  • Portable Radio System
  • Many other applications

“Smith rode over bumpy roads nine to 10 hours per day, seven days a week for three and a half months, and even fell off her bike with the backpack (and ROCKY). There were altitude changes of 11,000 feet and a temperature of 125 degrees Fahrenheit where ROCKY sat in a black back pack in direct sunlight. ‘In fact, my partner got heatstroke. But ROCKY didn’t.’”

“The Rocky units we purchased from AMREL are utilized twenty four hours per day, seven days per week. They have continuously performed above expectations and with minimal service and/or repair; in fact, all of the units we purchased in 2000 are still being utilized today.”

Thomas E. Carlotti,Deputy Chief of Police Erie, Pennsylvania

“It took several rounds of enemy fire and if it had not been for the computer I would have received the bullets in my back and probably been killed.”
